The first light to mark Lion’s Head Harbour was established in 1903 and was a fixed red light that could be seen for up to six miles. The original tower was knocked off its perch by hurricane-force winds in 1913 but was repaired and restored to a position on the pier. The original tower was dismantled in 1969 and replaced with a nondescript metal tower, but a replica was built in 1983 by students and was later used to replace the metal pole. In January 2020, a powerful storm demolished the tower, but a small team of volunteers worked to rebuild it on a new foundation located roughly twenty feet back from its earlier location.
