The Port Maitland Lighthouse is located at the mouth of the Grand River where it enters the northern shore of Lake Erie. Its name was given in honor of Sir Peregrine Maitland, who was the Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada from 1818 to 1828. The first lighthouse at this site was constructed in 1846, but due to extensive decay, it was replaced with a new one in 1871. However, the new lighthouse was destroyed by fire in 1875. The schooner Augustus Ford was lost nearby during a storm when the light at Port Maitland was not working, and four of the six crew members lost their lives. A replacement lighthouse was constructed, enclosed, and given a fog alarm in 1927.
