Photographed from the shoreline in winter, this snow-covered headland rising above the Atlantic is Signal Hill, the sentinel that has watched over the entrance to St. John's Harbour for centuries. At its summit, barely visible, stands Cabot Tower, built in 1900 to mark both Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee and the 400th anniversary of John Cabot's arrival in the New World. It was here, in December 1901, that Guglielmo Marconi received the first transatlantic wireless signal: the letter S, tapped three times in Morse code from Cornwall, England. The age of mass communication was born on this hill, in a single beep crossing an ocean. There are places that remind you how large the world is. This is one of them.
