Grimsby lies at the western edge of the Niagara Fruit Belt, where the escarpment rises sharply behind the lake plain below. Farmers here have long called this some of the most fertile ground in the region, soil built up over millennia of glacial deposit and warmed by air drawn off Lake Ontario.
