The first settlement, known as Dover Mills, was destroyed by American troops in 1814. A new settlement was established at the mouth of the Lynn River in 1835, but it was not until the arrival of rail service in the 1870s that the population grew significantly. Two railroads served Port Dover before they were acquired by the Grand Trunk Railway, and a cross-lake railcar ferry arrived in 1895. The town's first lighthouse was erected in 1845, and a new tower was built in 1904, which remains active today. The lighthouse was declared surplus by the Canadian Coast Guard in 2014, and ownership was transferred to Norfolk County to preserve the iconic structure.

Ref.: lighthousefriends.com

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1080/1212/files/Lighthouse_008_Port_Dover_Lake_Erie_Ontario_Canada_2023_5R5A7841_bordure_small_f722f4ea-e7a0-4681-9e8e-70b1d87e70a6.jpg?v=1712103540
lighthouse-ontario-009
Lighthouse # 009, Tobermory, Lake Huron, Ontario, Canada, 2023

Height | 41 feet (12.5 meters)

Geographic position | 45°15'28.8"N 81°40'24.2"W

Elevation on earth | 177 m. As shipping into the natural harbor developed due to fishing and logging, Earl hung a lantern on a tree branch at night to guide vessels through the dangerous passageways that lead to the harbor. The Commissioners of Public Works recommended a formal light at Tobermory in 1857, but it was not until 1881 that Earl was allowed $100 each year for “keeping a light at Tobermoray Harbour.” In 1885, the Department of Marine purchased three lots for $18 to erect a lighthouse. Abraham Davis was appointed keeper of the lighthouse, which was described as a hexagonal wooden building with a height of 43 feet from ground to lantern vane. Davis held the position of keeper for ten years, until he disappeared in 1895. His widow, Flora Davis, applied for the position but was denied due to regulations against placing women in such positions. Henry Davis, Abraham’s son, was appointed keeper of the light. The original tower was knocked off its perch by hurricane-force winds in 1913 but was repaired and restored to a position on the pier. The original tower was dismantled in 1969 and replaced with a nondescript metal tower, but a replica was built in 1983 by students and was later used to replace the metal pole. In January 2020, a powerful storm demolished the tower, but a small team of volunteers worked to rebuild it on a new foundation located roughly twenty feet back from its earlier location.

Ref.: lighthousefriends.com

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1080/1212/products/Lighthouse_010_Lion_s_Head_Ontario_Canada_2023_5R5A8110_bordure_small_357c5042-83b1-489c-b0c7-12052892a78b.jpg?v=1678366731
lighthouse-ontario-011
Lighthouse # 011, South Hampton, Lake Huron, Ontario, Canada, 2023

Height | 11 metres (36,1 ft)

Geographic position | 44°30'05.5"N 81°22'31.9"W

Elevation on earth | 574 ft

The Saugeen River Range Lights were established to guide fishing boats into the Saugeen River. The first light was a lantern hoisted atop a mast that was placed on a crib built fifty feet from the outer end of the breakwater pier on the north side of the river. The original green dioptric light was exhibited thirty feet above the high water mark and could be seen seven miles from all points of approach. In 1900, local fishermen established a fixed green light roughly 700 feet inland from the government's light to form a range for entering the river. The government assumed control of the rear range light in 1903 and built enclosed towers for the lights, with the back range light moved 1,650 feet east along the line of the range in 1907. In 1913, the color of the light exhibited by the range towers was changed from fixed green to fixed red, and the lights were electrified in 1939. Keeper appointments often carried political undertones, with Joseph L’Italien serving for thirty-four years. After automation in 1972, Yves Foucrault's passion preserved the lighthouse, leading to its recognition as a Federal Heritage Building in 1988. Initially noted on English charts as "Cape Despair," it actually translates to "Cape of Hope." Tradition recounts a fleet's wreck in 1711, leading to the abandonment of an attack on Quebec. Parliament approved funds for the lighthouse in 1871, with construction starting in 1873. It was completed in 1874, with a revolving light visible for fifteen miles. Keeper John Beck was appointed with a $400 annual salary. The lighthouse faced maintenance issues, including a broken revolving gear, which was promptly fixed. Keeper Beck expanded the living space in 1878. A fire damaged the tower's lantern room in 1883, leading to repairs. Further upgrades included a fog alarm in 1913 and replacement of the wooden tower with a concrete one in 1939. The current lighthouse exhibits a signature of four white flashes every thirty seconds and is still active under the Canadian Coast Guard's ownership, with the former keeper's dwellings now privately owned.

Keepers | John Beck (1874 - 1897), Charles Bourget (1897 - 1923), A. The site also housed a fog alarm building and semaphore for communication with passing vessels. The Fresnel lens transferred from the old lighthouse continues to produce its signature three white flashes every fifteen seconds — a thread of continuity between old and new. The Cantwell family, whose remarkable dynasty began with James Cantwell's appointment in 1846, continued to tend this new tower until Gerald Cantwell, the last of the line, stepped down in 1997 when the station was de-staffed.
